Interior Design of East Village Apartment by Koray Duman

East Village Apartment by Koray DumanNearly 600 square meters wide, every inch of the apartment had been used to handle by removing the wall to combine the living room, dining room and bedrooms into one. And then he used some clever storage space as a separator for each individual country to maintain the appearance of the room while providing their own home the theme that flows. With adequate natural lighting and some furniture style, that the house would steal the show. Koray Duman an architect from Turkey, managed to get my hands on this East Village Apartments and the renovation work to see vintage and classic sports. Home Design Ideas - Funky Fireplace

You can learn much from studying rooms that you love. Below I have attached a living room picture from a home I designed a few years ago. This turned out to be a very calm and soothing space. I wish I were sitting there now!

A few key points:
  • Windows were placed on both of the outside walls of the space. I always try to have natural lighting feeding into a space from more than one direction.
  • Fireplace wall design was asymmetrical. Here form followed function. We needed a hideaway for the flat screen on one side, but not both. That left space for a cozy bench on the other side of the fireplace.
  • A funky half oval shaped fireplace was used. This adds a very unique detail to an element that is normally very predictable (the rectangular fireplace box).
  • Yellow walls with cream trim; natural wood floors and leather - the materials and colors are comforting.
  • Dark ebony stained trim is used sparingly to cap off the fireplace and media cabinet and at the stair railing. This adds richness and sophistication to the space.
  • Recessed lighting above highlights the details of the composition.
The moral of this story is - if you are looking to remodel a space in your home; find pictures of similar spaces that you love. Then study them to discover what it is about that space that makes it work so well.

Nice Space, Good House Design2

My better half (Kelley) loves everything that interior designer Candice Olson performs. I just ran across one more example of a family room she designed which I have included directly below.

It seems like all of her work combines architectural and decorating elements in a sophisticated and harmonious way. Here I love the texture of the fireplace wall, the comfortable mixing of old and new (furniture and accessories) and the attention to lighting.

Key point - lighting is one of the most important things that you should not overlook. In this room it highlights the texture in the wall, brings the warmth of the wood media cabinet out and creates subtle reflections on the metal storage boxes. The space would still be nice, but not nearly so dramatic without it.

Ipod Kitchen Faucet

For years I have been wondering when someone would come out with a kitchen faucet / ipod - and here it is!

OK - its not an IPOD, but a touch screen. The faucet is produced by Italian manufacturer Fima Carlo Frattini.

The "Nonos" faucet allows the user to adjust water quantity, pressure and temperature. It also alerts the user in case of any malfunction such as leakage. The faucet’s touch-screen and easy-to-read graphic icons help in controlling the flow and temperature of the water stream.

Nice Space, Good House Design

I ran across this photo of a nice modern bedroom space and thought I would pass it on along with a couple of thoughts.

  • Obviously the design is all about the connection with the outdoors. Floor to ceiling glass with a patio directly outside bleed the definition between outside and inside. If it was my design I might have extended the roof line outward to create a covered patio zone. This would have created a transitional space between inside and outside.
  • The room is nearly void of detail. Why distract from the view?
  • A very simple palette of material and color. The decorating takes a back seat to the outdoors.
So what's the moral to this story? If you have a beautiful yard take advantage of it. Spend more money on glass and patio / porch space and spend less by keeping the interiors more minimal.

Interior design: create a beach themed bedroom

You can enjoy the summer all year round by creating a beach themed bedroom. When creating your beach themed bedroom, you will want to stay on track and avoid obvious themes to keep the room timeless and relaxing. Unless you have a love for the following, you will want to avoid designing the room around lighthouses, and over abundance of seashells and nautical themes. You want to create simple relaxed atmosphere, not overwhelm yourself with imagery.

Wall treatments: Use colors notorious for relaxation, comfort, and welcome. Pastel shades of green, yellow, off white, and blue are great colors to use. You can choose simple print wallpaper

in these colors or create a very simple faux wall treatment. You can do a light wash, paint simple stripes, swirls, or sponge imprint a simple shape onto the walls.

Window Treatments: Window treatments should be light and breezy. You want to be able to imagine these curtains blowing in the breeze. Hang simple tab top or tie top curtain panels on white painted wooden rods.

Furniture: Furniture should be kept simple and have a light relaxed atmosphere. You can purchase a wicker set that includes dresser, armoire, love seat, headboard and a bench for the foot of the bed. Other alternatives would be to white wash existing furniture by thinning white paint with water or a faux glazing product, and putting layers of paint on the furniture until you are satisfied with the color.

Bedding: If you feel a strong need to use a theme item in your room décor, this is the place you will to use it. This is an item that you will keep for a year or season only. Use the color from your walls as your background color, and then choose a pattern like seashells, lighthouses, or something abstract. Keeping the walls and bedding in the same color family will further promote rest and relaxation.

Flooring: A white washed wood floor would be ideal for this setting. If you are uncomfortable making permanent changes to your floor, you have other options. You can purchase a soft, lightweight, light colored throw rug, or a wall-to-wall carpet in pastel color like blue, mauve or light green.

Accessories: As long as the accessories are not expensive, this is another area to bring in themed items. However, you must be careful not to overwhelm. Your wall hangings, nick-knacks, and disposable items can be shaped like seashells, lighthouses, and anchors if you wish. You an make all of the accessories yourself by bringing home items from the beach to make shadow box collages, and to accessorize light weight wicker items like picture frames, lamps, wastebaskets, and laundry baskets. In addition to making items to decorate your room, bring some life into the room in the form of plants. Place both hanging plants and floor plants in from of the windows to bring a bit of summer time into the room. Balance the extra shade provided by the plants with extra light wattage into the room.

The color family of Turquoise and Aquamarine has more to do with feeling and creative expression than with rational thought. These colors between green and blue the shades of turquoise, blue green and aquamarine relate to transformation, evolution, change. Aquamarine: stimulates the intellect and stabilizes the emotions, improves confidence, and the ability to stand fast, helps communication. Turquoise: supportive and protective, heals the spirit, soothing, increases contentment.

Benjamin Moore Virtual Fan Deck

As this week marks the beginning of Spring and pink is a color I associate with spring as the cherry trees are starting to blossom, I have two favourite Benjamin Moore Paint colors to share with you that are season appropriate: 1. Benjamin Moore Spring Azalea & 2. Benjamin Moore Springtime Bloom. The color Spring Azalea has a little more of a purple cast to it than the Springtime Bloom and is a closer match to the color on the wall of this beautiful room. Benjamin Moore has a neat product on their web-site that you can see color samples on line. This living room is in a house is located on the island of IBIZA and has been designed by the German architect ERWIEN WACHTER in the style of Mies van der Rohe. It is available for rental. If you are interested Contact MONIKA BORCHERT for information. I will be posting more photos of this house, but for now this is just a little teaser. Be sure to check out Benjamin Moore Virtual Fan Deck

Happy Happy Spring

Miele Limited Edition Chocolate Laundry

A few weeks ago a package arrived in the mail, and to my surprise when I opened it, there was a box of chocolates in shiny brown wrapping tied with a red satin ribbon accompanied by this photo of the new Miele Limited Edition Chocolate Laundry.

Miele Chocolate Laundry
This new "Limited Edition" Chocolate Laundry claims a patented honeycomb drum, which is engineered not only to clean clothes better, but also to make clothes last longer by reducing fabric strain and wear. The dryer uses moisture sensors rather than timers.

What a nice way to make a statement. Thank-you Miele for the chocolates and for the Chocolate Laundry.

How to CLEAN and CARE for LUCITE

Lucite and acrylic (which is the generic name for this plastic), have become popular materials for
furniture, tables, lamps, hardware, trays etc. It is important to clean and care for lucite properly from
the start as it is a somewhat delicate material. Proper steps should be exercised in cleaning lucite.

Lucite cabinet handles / Lucite Tray

Clean lucite with hot soapy water using a soft cloth. The type of polishing cloth you use will make a difference. The ideal cloth is nonabrasive, absorbent, and lint free.
To eliminate any chance of scratching lucite , use only disposable cloths. Reusable cloths can retain abrasive particles, but you won't know for sure until the damage is done.

Do not use sprays such as Windex or Fantastic on lucite.
Care, Caring for, Cleaning for Lucite and Acrylic

This kit from from Novus Polish is great to have on hand.

1. Cleans all plastics(lucite) without scratching. Leaves a lustrous shine that resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static.
2. Removes fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics(lucite). Repeated use restores faded and discolored plastics.
3. Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic(lucite) surfaces.

The talented Aaron R Thomas designs custom Lucite furniture in Orange County CA, and recommends this Acrylic Furniture Lucite Cleaning and Polishing Kit.
